A day of discussion focussing on the changes and the challenges of the independent upholsterer.

This one-day symposium is an opportunity to listen to, and exchange ideas and stories around the craft of upholstery in an informal and informative way. The Symposium takes place within the touring exhibition Upholstery: Evolution to Revolution at the National Centre for Craft and Design in Sleaford, Lincolnshire. 


Hosted by craft and design journalist Grant Gibson. An hour of discussion focussing on the changes and the challenges of the independent upholsterer - how the industry has changed and what the implications are for the future of the craft. What is upholstery? / Who are the upholsterers? / How do we work? / How are we taught? / How are we governed?

Leigh-Anne Treadwell, Creative Social Entrepreneur, Maker, Founder & Director at Bristol Upholstery Collective, a shared industry maker-space welcoming all to share in a passion for creative upholstery.

Gareth Rees 

The British School of Upholstered Furniture 

Co-director and tutor at the British school of upholstery, student representative and committee member of the Guild of traditional upholstery and working upholsterer of twenty-three years.

Richard Ranklin 

Association Manager, AMUSF 

Richard is the manager of the AMUSF. He has spent his entire career in the industry predominantly in branded furniture production but now enjoys the ever-expanding craft sector.

Hannah Weston Smith 

Traditional Upholsterer and Furniture 


Hannah Weston Smith runs her own traditional upholstery business in Lincolnshire. Her qualifications in design, teaching and furniture conservation have given her a broad knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the trade.


A series of 10-minute stories with Q&A by an eclectic mix of inspiring and informative speakers. Taking your product to market / designing your brand / branding yourself / working with a gallery / promoting and selling your work online.

Corinne Webb 

Frame & Cover, founder and director 

Award-winning Frame & Cover was born out of a commitment to creating modern and bespoke UK made home furnishings using wholly sustainable methods. Corinne is a trained upholsterer and textile designer with many years experience of working in the industry.

Sharon O’Connor 

Vintique Upholstery 

Following a long career in the fashion industry, managing the operations and business development of Brands, Sharon O’Connor turned her hand to upholstery. Training in the Lake District and then at The Cass, London she set up her studio in Surrey in 2013.

Bryony Windsor 

Head of Exhibitions at the NCCD 

Bryony Windsor, Head of Exhibitions at The National Centre for Craft & Design. Bryony Windsor was Assistant Director in The Scottish Gallery, Scotland’s oldest commercial gallery, for six years before becoming Head of Exhibitions at NCCD in 2014.
