This showcase features artworks that were created in the communities along Ridges & Furrows, an arts and heritage trail that links NCCD in Sleaford with Whisby Nature Park in Lincoln.

Fertile Ground by Lyndall Phelps (2016)

Fertile Ground was a temporary installation created for St Chad’s Church, Welbourn, by Lyndall Phelps in 2016, for the Ridges & Furrows art and heritage trail.

During her visits to Welbourn, Lyndall was captivated by the open views into the surrounding farmland. She researched local historical agricultural practices, and met with Welbourn residents, seeing the homes and farms of people she had researched. Her installation comprises crafted objects and imagery suspended inside circular frames, referencing a ‘golden age’ of agriculture, led by small farmsteads in Lincolnshire around the 1850s and 1860s.

Good Pretty Things / Pretty Good Things by Kate Genever and Katie Smith (2015)

This residency explored and celebrated the handmade and homemade objects belonging to Sleaford residents, discovering who made them, their personal significance and the stories behind them.

Kate & Katie toured Sleaford in their ‘Moveable Museum of Curious Objects’, (set within a 1980s caravan), inviting people to bring along their handcrafted objects. Selected objects were photographed using a technique called ‘wet plate collodion’. This is one of the oldest photography processes, and was chosen as the images created became unique and beautiful artefacts in their own right.

Ridges & Furrows is an arts & heritage trail linking The National Centre for Craft and Design in Sleaford with Whisby Nature Park via the Lincoln Edge. Permanent and temporary artworks have been commissioned for the trail by artsNK and NCCD over the last four years.
